A recent research conducted on a group of 12 to 18 year old audiences stated that the internet is lowering concentration levels as well as attention span of young internet users. The research claims that the youth are being rewired by the internet and this has led to Associative Thinking in the youth.
As part of the study, a group of people was given a series of questions to be answered by means of information gleaned from internet research. The number of websites each individual visited to produce their answers was recorded and analysed. It was found that the older audience used the same web sources repeatedly and took a much longer time to answer the given questions. However, the younger audiences were much quicker and used just half the number of websites to answer a single question. About 40% of the youth visited just 2-3 websites. The research concluded that the younger audiences were accustomed to flipping through sites to mimic the way information is laid out online.
According to Professor David Nicholas extensive use of the internet is the reason for lowered levels on concentration in younger students. This is not a good sign according to him.
This information as well as more revelations will be made in the concluding part of the BBC2′S documentary on Virtual Revolution. This series is looking at the way the internet is impacting modern life.
