Creation theory or other supernatural, tremendous means of the earth’s origination is without a whit of evidence! Special creation theory is given also to apply to the higher groups in addition to the species of a genus, and even Mr. Darwin’s toughest critics dare to propose that the proterozoic bird, reptile, or fish could have been “specially created.” And this enormous, this totally unprecedented change in common view has been the result of the work of one man, and was brought about in only twenty years! This is the resolve to those who go on to assert that the “origin of species” is not yet discovered. We may acknowledge all of this, just as we may acknowledge that there are sizable difficulties in the manner of a complete comprehension of the origination and nature of all the parts of the solar system and of the astral universe. Yet we distinguish Darwin as the Newton of natural history, just so certainly as we accept that the discovery and demonstration by Newton of the law of gravitational force determined order in place of chaos and set a sure foundation for all approaching study of the cosmos, so certainly has Darwin, by his uncovering of the law of natural selection and his presentation of the great theory of the preservation of usable variations in the struggle for existence made a strong base for all prospective study of nature.

Just to point out the position Darwin held of his own study, and he alone claimed to have done, the concluding passage of the introduction to the Origin of Species should be carefully counted. “Although much remains vague, and will long remain obscure, I can entertain no doubt, after the most measured and dispassionate judgment of which I am capable, that the opinion which most naturalists until recently entertained and which I formerly entertained is false. I am fully positive that species are not immutable; but that those belonging to what are called the same genera are linear descendents of some other and generally extinct species, in the same fashion as the acknowledged varieties of any one species are the descendents of that species. Furthermore, I am certain that Natural Selection has been the most important, but not the only, means of modification.”
